    The interaction between active non-spherical swimmers and dynamic fluid environments plays a fundamental role in biological, environmental, and medical processes. However, generic interaction rules between flow and active swimmers are still missing. Here, we propose a generic interaction rule between a robust flow structure, Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs), and active non-spherical swimmers. Using a hybrid experimental-numerical model, we show that rod-like swimmers with intermediate intrinsic velocities have a strong and robust preferential alignment with attracting LCSs, which further leads to a strong heterogeneous spatial distribution. In contrast, disk-like swimmers, passive, and very fast swimmers show a much weaker preference. Moreover, we show the self-similarity of this heterogeneous distribution, which boils the intricate interaction down to only one control parameter. Our results generically elucidate the interaction between active and non-spherical swimmers with LCSs and, thus, can be widely applied to many natural and engineered fluids. This research is conducted over the course of three months during the pandemic this year and is done fully remotely.
